FA YSDN 3106: Fall 2011

Archive for November, 2011

ATTENTION: Aya has keys for cases

Could you please let everyone know that I have the ONLY key to the cases? I
unlocked all of them (except the last 2 at the end because those are not ours
as far as I know, and I also did not unlock the packaging case and the one with
the Design and Master of Design posters right next to the type room. Everything
else is unlocked). Just so people don’t freak out when Jane or Antonia tell
them they don’t have the key- they don’t need it.

Aya,
You did the ‘right thing’ about leaving the first two cases alone.
Thanks for taking responsibility for the class.
Best,
Catherine

Colour Palette for Wayfinding

ISHINO RESPONSE:
1) Am unsure what colour stands for what group?
A) pls specify and note in the ‘comment’ area below & post which colours are meant for what group.

2) There are Three Major Groups- Grids, Multiplicities & Museums, AND Six smaller groups- TCC/Bike Lanes, Dundas Square/Chinatown, AGO/ Queen West.
A) So there seems to be too many- 3 not 5, OR not enough 5 vs the needed 6.

So if you could address this in your palette sent to me, it would be much appreciated.

thnx! ci

Class Poster Grid Reference

Feel free to use Class Grid provided, but you do NOT have to use it literally. So instead of headings directly like WHERE?- just use as references of what copy to provide below the cutlines- Design Department, TEL Building, 4006- 4th Floor.

If you have further questions, pls do not hesitate to send me a draft and I’ll crit it for you, if you’d like.

Class Grid for Project 4’s Posters

Pls add the following to your posters as ‘body copy’ i.e. smaller than headline.

Chinatown Poster Draft

China Town Poster- Draft

Pls add the following to your posters as ‘body copy’ i.e. smaller than headline.
& we’ll post all of them this FRIDAY, DEC 2nd after class, eh?

[OPTIONAL] Names of members of your group, list alphabetically

ISHINO’S RESPONSE

Looks good &… is reflective of your installation idea @ China Town w red strings & pix of individuals- good!

I suggest you add:
1) more specific location of display i.e. Design Department, 4006
2) title of entire class project- OCCUPY THE PUBLIC SPHERE
3) Class Info: Image & Influence, FA YSDN 3106A
4) Your area’s stance in relationship to Habermas’ notion of the ‘Public Sphere’ such as ?

Toronto’s China Town is comprised of ‘mom & pop’ stores that have been started one place at a time. Therefore, this organic [visual imagery] development, over a span of ? years, has created an atmosphere reflective more of ‘Private Spheres’ situated inside the overall & larger [& influential] ‘Public Sphere’ that now comprises China Town. Also, the stories of the people, who live & work in this part of the City, are tales of individuals who have travelled long distances & overcome many obstacles to become a part of today’s Chinatown.

BOLD TYPE ABOVE ADDED LATER TO CLARIFY CONNECTION TO CLASS, IMAGE & INFLUENCE. BY CI.

Dundas Square Poster Draft

1) Dundas Poster

Pls add the following to your posters as ‘body copy’ i.e. smaller than headline.
& we’ll post all of them this FRIDAY, DEC 2nd after class, eh?

OCCUPY THE PUBLIC SPHERE: (Your area of town- Dundas, AGO, TTC, etc)
Design Department
TEL Building, 4006- 4th Floor
Image & Influence, FA YSDN 3106A

[OPTIONAL] Names of members of your group, list alphabetically

2) Dundas Poster- 2

Deadline moved back to Fri, Dec 2 – Liked earlier one better &…

This last one you sent me, although it follows the ‘class grid’, is not as
vibrant, nor does it depict Dundas Square as well. I suggest:

1) Take out the yellow underline lines

2) Do NOT use the words: WHERE, WHEN, WHAT
A) just write out the location, dates, and what your 3d display is about in
relation to Habermas and the Public Sphere and your positioning/stance w using
the mirrors to both reflect & distort the viewers self-image & self-reflection
B) In regards to the ‘Public Sphere,’ the images (adverts) of Dundas Square
seem to influence & overwhelm the ‘Private Sphere’ or individual personal
choice. The ‘Private Sphere’ appears as if it is delimited & surrounded by the
‘Public Sphere’ of the major commercial concerns of large corporations in the
downtown area.

3) Use your previous type of ‘Dundas Square’ made up of dots and your more open
feeling layout, with the spotlights highlighting the name.

4) Do not forget to add the following to your posters as ‘body copy’ (i.e.
smaller than your headline)

OCCUPY THE PUBLIC SPHERE: (Your area of town- Dundas, AGO, TTC, etc)
Design Department
TEL Building, 4006- 4th Floor
Image & Influence, FA YSDN 3106A

[OPTIONAL] Names of members of your group, list alphabetically

5) We’ll put up all of the poster this FRIDAY, DEC 2nd after class.

Week 12: Posters- copy & deadline moved to Fri, Dec 2

Pls add the following to your posters as ‘body copy’ i.e. smaller than headline.
& we’ll post all of them this FRIDAY, DEC 2nd after class.

OCCUPY THE PUBLIC SPHERE: (Your area of town- Dundas, AGO, TTC, etc)
Design Department
TEL Building, 4006- 4th Floor
Image & Influence, FA YSDN 3106A

[OPTIONAL] Names of members of your group, list alphabetically
